OS2008 update is awesome!

If you own an N800 or an N810, I highly recommend performing the firmware update that was announced on the Maemo site. I performed the update shortly after yesterday’s blog post and have to say that this is much more than your standard minor bug fix update. The default Modest e-mail client rocks (bye bye crappy default e-mail client of the past!), the unit is running a lot smoother and quicker than it did on the day it first arrived, and the web browser is a lot more stable than it previously was (haven’t had any of the freezing or stuttering issues I used to). You do not need to worry about anything stored on either the internal or external memory card. None of that data will be touched during the process. But if you have data that you need stored to the device’s RAM, make sure you have it backed up. I chose to not back up my user data before flashing because some of my stuff like my contact list needed a cleanup anyways.

I’ll be spending a good amount of time over the next couple days reloading all my favorite applications again. I’ll report any stability issues that are found. Go Diablo!

Nokia delivers OS2008 update.

The long awaited and highly anticipated firmware update has been released for OS2008 and is currently available for download for your N800/N810. According to the Maemo site, this update includes the Seamless Software Update feature so future updates should be available OTA and without the need to re-flash the device. Unfortunately this time around requires the need to re-flash the unit. A small price to pay for bug fixes and new enhancements. According to Engadget, the changelog is very lengthy. However, they do point out that the update includes the very long awaited replacement of the default e-mail client with one based on Modest (which is what I was using anyways).

Once my N810 is done charging, I’ll be performing the firmware update. As much as I don’t want to re-flash, it’s a small price to pay. Besides, I can start with a clean slate and re-load just the stuff I want. Werd to your firmware flash!

Goodbye N95-3

Yes, that’s right. Yesterday, I said goodbye to my Nokia N95-3. I will miss it a lot. It served just about every purpose I needed it to and was possibly the best phone I have ever owned. But it was time to move on so I purchased something else…

The man, the myth, the Howard on the N810.

Howard Chui, of www.howardforums.com fame, posted his own personal review of the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet. Go check it out over at www.howardchui.com. I have to personally say that this is one of my favorite reviews that I have read thus far. I enjoy that Howard keeps it down to earth and simple. Many other reviewers have made assumptions that their readers are expert Linux users and/or developers (neither of which I am) or they have been absolutely horrible due to the reviewer’s lack of time spent doing their research (such as the really bad one being discussed over at ITT). Having met Howard in the past, I must say that he truly knows his stuff and I commend him for giving the NIT another chance!

Stayin’ alive.

I apologize to my readers (if there are any) for my lack of progress on this blog. I’m the kind of person who hates to make excuses, however, the last three weeks have been rather tough for me due to some unfortunate circumstances. Hopefully they will be fixed soon though. Once it is, I will be able to focus a lot more energy on putting this little project of mine together. Click the read link for more…

I’m sorry…

Nokia N810Dear laptop,

I am sorry but you just haven’t been needed lately. Since buying my N810, you have really only been used to make a PowerPoint presentation for work last week. I’m sorry if you have felt neglected…

It’s so true. My laptop has been collecting dust. And since I finally paired my iGo Stowaway Keyboard to the N810, it’s been perfect.

Gonna do a project soon and see if the N810 can completely replace a laptop for basic everyday use. Stay tuned for details!!!

My N810 impressions thus far…

Nokia N810Well my N810 arrived yesterday morning. and all I can say is WOW! It has exceeded my expectations thus far. I do have one gripe so far though…

My Nokia N810 is on it’s way!

Nokia N810Well I finally gave into temptation and ordered myself a Nokia N810. When it was announced back in October, I was quite impressed just like I (mostly) always am with Nokia. I had been trying to resist the urge (why, I have no idea) since it’s release but couldn’t anymore. It will be arriving Tuesday in all of it’s Linux based Tablet goodness. Stay tuned for an unboxing and my own little review… OCK style……
